Upcoming Events and News

Join us at Juneau Makerspace on Monday from 6 to 8 pm for our weekly Open Night Studio. This week we will have a workshop on making holiday cards. There will also be woodworking and laser cutting projects being worked on, and as always a welcoming community to join.
Next week we will have an intro to sewing class. Other upcoming events include the weekly Friday night HAM radio building at 7 pm, and our monthly board meeting on Tuesday.
Juneau Makerspace is the perfect place to make holiday gifts for friends and family. Membership to Juneau Makerspace also makes for a great gift. We’re offering a limited time deal for new members in January of 50% off your first month of membership. For new signups January family memberships will only cost $25. Please note that members do not receive 24 hour access to the Makerspace until the start of their second month of membership.
Juneau Makerspace is a nonprofit and fully supported by your participation and donations. Consider donating to the Makerspace this holiday season to help keep us running. In addition to funding, we are always looking for tools and equipment that we don’t yet have as well as other basic necessities. Right now our wishlist also includes an 8 foot ladder. We are also looking for volunteers who are willing to help with grant writing. Please get in touch with us if you want to help.

Upcoming events for November and December

This week at the Monday Open Studio Night we’re having a presentation on using Blender for 3D modeling and design. Blender is a free software and is great for everything from 3D printing to animation. Come end your Monday with an open and welcoming community, and learn a new skill. Join us 6 to 8 pm at the Makerspace.
We’ve got great Monday night events coming up as well:
November 21st: Intro to Maker Resources Seminar. Come find out how to tap into the growing Maker Movement.
November 28th: Laser Cutter Class. Come learn how to use our laser cutter.
December 5th: Holiday Ornament Creation Class. Come make some holiday ornaments.
December 12th: Holiday Card Making Class. Come make holiday cards that will be truly special.
We’ve also got Ham radio building on Friday nights at 7 pm through the end of the month.

Going Steampunk: This Week at the Open Studio Night

This week at our Open Studio Night, Monday 6 to 8 pm, we’re having a special presentation on steampunk. Come learn how to make a Halloween costume that will help you blend into a world of airships and  stylized giant gears, and how to turn an old nerf gun into a dinosaur hunting rifle. Thanks to Seth Caron, aka Colonel Tanner, for the presentation. As always, Open Studio Nights are free and open to everyone.
Our garage sale was a great success. We’ve opened up a lot more floor space to bring in new equipment and accommodate larger projects.
Next week we’re pumpkin carving at the Makerspace. Don’t just carve a few triangles into your pumpkin and call it good. Bring it by Open Studio Night to have the scariest pumpkin in the neighborhood.
There will not be an Open Studio Night on Halloween itself, though the space is always available for members.
For those interested in Ham radios, you can come by the Makerspace on Friday nights at 7 pm to help build one and learn more about them.

Makerspace Events and Lasers

There’s a lot happening at the Makerspace. We’ve got awesome events coming up and cool new tools, so come on by our Monday Open Studio Night at 6:00 pm. This week we’re having a class on making artists trading cards.
We have a new event on Friday nights as well. A couple of Juneau Amateur Radio Club members are building a radio transceiver and anyone interested is welcome to join them on this project or work on your own radio. They’re meeting on Friday nights at 7 pm through November.
We now have a laser cutter. We’ve gotten a 40 watt CO2 laser that still may need a bit of calibration, but it does laser things. It’s great for both cutting and engraving on a wide variety of materials. We will be teaching members how to use it on an individual basis for now.
On October 15th we will have our second annual garage sale for the Makerspace. We have a lot of gorilla shelf parts and more ceramic molds that we are offering up before we need to take them to the dump. That will be on a Saturday at 9 am.
We will have a kiln firing for ceramic glazing on October 12th. If you want to color any of the ceramic tiles we’ve made for our founders wall, you must come in before then to do so. If you want to help with the project or have your own pieces glazed, come on by, we have everything you’ll need.
We are going to be building a Little Free Library. A generous volunteer has drawn up a set of plans, and we’ve got all the material lying around the Makerspace to build it. The Little Free Library will be a book stand going outside the JACC, so if you want to have your handiwork proudly displayed in Juneau, come help us build it.
Upcoming events include:
October 3rd: Costume Making
October 10th: Seminar on using Worbla (thermoplastics costume molding)
October 12th: Glaze Kiln Firing
October 15: Garage Sale
October 17th: Workshop on Steampunk Props and Weapons
October 24th: Pumpkin carving, Maker Style
November 7th: Rubber Stamping Class
Open Studio Nights start at 6 pm every Monday, with events starting at 6:30.
Catch us on KTOO’s Juneau Afternoon this Monday at 3:30.

Upcoming Events

We’ve got a lot of great upcoming events. Check out the calendar tab for more.

On September 5th we will be having an introduction to acrylic painting. Come learn the basics for creating your masterpiece.

September 12th we will have a show and tell for any type of maker project you’re working on. If you’re creating, crafting, designing, or doing, we want to see it.

As an ongoing project, we are asking for designs of Little Free Libraries until September 21st, when we will decide on the best designs and do a material drive to get materials for making them. Here’s more information about them: https://littlefreelibrary.org/

We’ve got a new piece of equipment in the shop. We now have a 24″ dual headed drum sander. We’ve got a wide range of sandpaper to go with it, and with two drums it’s twice the sanding in one pass.

Finally, we’d like to give a special welcome to Grace Amundsen, our new Events Director. If there’s an event you’d like to see
